How to Prepare Windows Before Running an Epson Service Utility
A practical Windows checklist for USB connection, drivers, permissions, power and background software before opening a model-specific printer service utility.
Many adjustment-program failures are caused by the Windows environment rather than the printer itself. A stable USB connection, the correct driver and a clean service session can prevent communication errors before any maintenance function is selected.
Start with a direct, stable connection
For service work, a direct USB connection is usually easier to troubleshoot than Wi-Fi because it removes router, network-discovery and firewall variables. If the utility documentation for your exact printer requires another connection method, follow that requirement instead.
Connect the printer directly to the computer when possible. Avoid passive hubs, loose front-panel ports and long extension cables during service operations. If Windows repeatedly disconnects and reconnects the printer, resolve that issue before continuing.
Confirm the correct printer driver and queue
Open Windows printer settings and check that the exact Epson model appears without an error symbol. Remove stale duplicate queues only if you understand which one is active, then print a normal test page if the printer still allows printing.
A service utility can sometimes list more than one logical port. Selecting a stale or virtual port may produce a communication error even though the printer is physically connected.
Use a clean session with normal permissions
Close other printer utilities, firmware tools, scanning software and applications that may be actively polling the device. Rebooting Windows before a sensitive service operation is a simple way to clear locked ports.
Some legacy utilities require elevated permissions or older Windows compatibility settings. Use those options only when the exact utility needs them. Do not disable security software permanently; if a trusted archive is blocked, verify the file first and use the narrowest temporary exception possible.
Stabilise power and avoid interruption
Do not run initialization, EEPROM, firmware-adjacent or other write operations while the computer or printer is likely to lose power. Disable sleep temporarily for the short service session and connect a laptop to AC power.
After the operation completes, close the utility normally, wait for the printer to become idle, and then power-cycle only if the instructions call for it.
Practical checklist
Use a direct and reliable printer connection.
Confirm Windows recognises the exact printer model.
Close other printer and scanner utilities.
Temporarily prevent sleep during the service session.
Verify the archive before making antivirus exceptions.
Use administrator/compatibility mode only when needed by that utility.
Continue with the exact printer model
Use the model library for exact compatibility notes, or open Printer Errors if the issue is a specific warning or symptom.
