Epson AdjProg Communication Error: USB, Driver and Port Troubleshooting

Work through the most common causes of communication errors in Epson service utilities without repeatedly resetting or writing printer values.

A communication error usually means the service utility cannot complete a reliable exchange with the printer. The cause can be as simple as the wrong port or as complex as a driver, cable or model mismatch. The safest response is to diagnose the connection before retrying any write operation.

Confirm the printer is visible to Windows first

Before troubleshooting the service utility, check whether Windows sees the printer consistently. Open the printer queue, device settings or Device Manager and watch for repeated disconnects. If Windows cannot keep the device connected, the adjustment program is unlikely to communicate reliably.

Try a known-good USB cable and a different direct USB port. Avoid switching several settings at once; one change at a time makes it easier to identify the cause.

Verify the port selected inside the utility

Legacy Epson utilities may show USB ports or printer entries that no longer correspond to the current connection. Select the entry that matches the active printer. If the utility has an automatic selection option, confirm the detected model before continuing.

Do not select a port just because it is the only item in the list. A virtual PDF port, network queue or stale USB mapping can still appear and cause an immediate communication failure.

Rule out software conflicts

Close Epson status monitors, firmware updaters, scan applications and third-party printer managers that may hold the device port. A clean reboot can release a port that another process left in use.

Firewall settings are less likely to matter for a direct USB connection, but network-based utilities may be affected by network isolation or security software. Keep troubleshooting proportional to the actual connection type.

Treat model mismatch as a hard stop

If the utility identifies a different printer or fails after a model-selection screen, verify the model package again. A communication error caused by incompatible software should not be “fixed” by forcing a different model profile.

Return to the exact OSFILE model page or the official support list for that utility. If the required build is missing, request the exact file rather than experimenting with a nearby model.

Practical checklist

Confirm the printer remains connected in Windows.

Try a known-good direct USB cable and port.

Select the active printer/USB port inside the utility.

Close other applications that may access the printer.

Reboot once to clear stale ports.

Stop if the utility identifies a different model.

NEXT STEP

Continue with the exact printer model

Use the model library for exact compatibility notes, or open Printer Errors if the issue is a specific warning or symptom.
